Sketchbook (ff.1-74) inscribed on pasted label: ‘Madras & places near it - Shevaroy Hills, and March to Bellary’, and on flyleaf: ‘M. Carlisle. Madras Decr. 1866’. Mrs. Carlisle began the sketchbook on arrival in Madras and the drawings cover first impressions, a trip to the Shevaroy Hills with friends Captain and Mrs. J.S.H. Algar, also of the 60th Foot, Pallaveram, Poonamallee and a march to Bellary with the regiment. Drawings inscribed with titles, dates and notes by both Carlisles. Unfinished drawings on end papers.

Inscribed: ‘We land at Madras August 2nd 1866 and are somewhat alarmed at the ferocious aspect of the natives who crowd round us (children fresh from school!)’.
