Captain George Hutchins Bellasis (1807-1862), three quarter length, in uniform.
Inscribed on label on reverse: ‘[H]ervé, Miniature Painter, 172 Oxford Street, London’. This inscription is damaged and has been overwritten. Also in a later hand: ‘Capt. George Hutchins Bellasis 24th Bombay NI about 1845’.
Water-colour; 18.5 by 15.5cm.
Purchased 1988.
Note: For the sitter see WD2284-2328. Bellasis was on furlough in England from January 1843 returning to Bombay in December 1845. He married Fanny Skelton, daughter of Daniel Jones Skelton at Bowness, Cumbria, August 1845. Hervé had a studio at 193 Oxford Street from 1842-6.
