The tents of the hostage sons of Tipu Sultan on the Island, Madras, with Fort St George beyond. Artist(s): Marriott, Thomas (c.1773-1847)
- Scope & Content:
-
The tents of the hostage sons of Tipu Sultan on the Island, Madras, with Fort St. George beyond.
Inscribed on reverse: ‘Fort St George SW View from the Island - the front Ground occupied by the Kannat of the Hostage Princes & their Encampment T.M. March 1794 No 7.’
Water-colour; 42.5 by 56cm.
Purchased 1990.
Note: Two of Tipu’s sons, 'Abdal Khaliq and Muiz ud-Din, were delivered to Lord Cornwallis as hostages on 26 February 1792, arriving with their vakils in Madras on 29 June 1792. The Madras Council made an initial outlay of 1663 pagodas for their accommodation, providing them with a house in the fort. They were in the charge of Captain Gabriel Doveton until he returned them to their father at Devanelli. The party left Madras in February 1794 and the Madras Military Consultations for 8 March record the procurement of a field officer’s tent for the princes from Colonel Guiles. It would seem they stayed in an encampment on the Island for a few days before setting off.
