Half-length portrait of John, 13th Baron Elphinstone (1807-1860), wearing a green shirt with a large white collar, and a crimson cloak draped over his left shoulder. Artist(s): Hastings, W.A. (fl. c.1825)
- Scope & Content:
-
Half-length portrait of John, 13th Baron Elphinstone (1807-1860), wearing a green shirt with a large white collar, and a crimson cloak draped over his left shoulder, c.1825.
Water-colour with some pencil; 26.8 by 22 cm.
Purchased 1994.
Note: Lord Elphinstone was Governor of Madras from 1837 to 1842 and Bombay from 1853 to May 1860. During the latter office he successfully quelled a conspiracy connected with the 1857 uprising, and assisted other troubled areas by releasing Bombay troops for service. The portrait, painted when he was a very young man, was probably made at about the time he entered the Royal Horse Guards in 1826.
