Hill fort at Tyaga Durgam, South Arcot District.
Inscribed:’ North-East View of the Hill Fort at Tiagar taken at the distance of 320 yards from the Lower Fort Wall - July 12th 1787.’
Pen and ink with green and grey washes; 34 by 56.5cm. with painted border.
Purchased 1995.
Note: The fort, then known as Thiagur or Tiagar, was a place of considerable importance during the Mysore Wars as it was one of the bulwarks against invasion from the west. It changed hands a number of times between the English, the French and the Mysore rulers between 1757 and 1790. The drawing shows the two fortifications, one above the other, with the pettah on the plain below.
