A view on the Ganges. Artist(s): Zoffany, Johann (1733-1810)
- Scope & Content:
-
A view on the Ganges.
Black, white and red chalk on grey paper; 27.2 by 45.5 cm.
Purchased 1995.
Note: A note in ink on the reverse of the frame read: ‘This is one of a group of drawings by Zoffany, inherited by Major R.G. Hutchinson from his father,’ ‘Brigadier Hutchinson’. Drawings of this kind by Zoffany were apparently included in Zoffany’s Sale after his death (Robins, 9 May 1811, lots 14-39), but none had previously been identified. Several of the drawings have insciptions and dates on the back, generally of the year 1788, the year before Zoffany left India; and two are signed. One of the signed drawings is now in the British Museum, with four others of the same group. All the drawings except this one were sold to Messrs. Colnaghi in 1954, and two were exhibited by them in an exhibition of Old Master Drawings in May 1955. The frame also had an old Colnaghi label inscribed: ‘Johann Zoffany RA (1733-1810). A View on the Ganges.’
The chalk drawings referred to appear to have been made in late 1788, see ‘India and British portraiture 1770-1825’, M. Archer, London, 1979, p164.
