Half-length portrait of a young woman. Inscribed: 'Bengal Steamer 1858. E Lundgren'. Artist(s): Lundgren, Egron Sellif (1815-1875)
- Scope & Content:
-
Half-length portrait of a young woman.
Inscribed:’ Bengal Steamer 1858. E Lundgren’.
Water-colour; oval.31 by 25.4 cm.
Purchased 1996.
Note: Lundgren travelled to India from Southampton on board the P & O Steamer ‘Bengal’, which arrived at Calcutta on the 17th March 1858. He travelled first class and there were only two women among the passengers on the voyage from Southampton, Mrs. J Remfrey and Mrs. Goldsworthy. At Madras they were joined by a Mrs. Benson, along with the Rev. Robert Henderson and his young wife, Anne Charlotte, née Anderson. The couple had been married at St. George’s Cathedral, Madras, on the 1st February 1858, and he was on his way to take up a new appointment as Junior Chaplain at St. Andrew’s Church, Calcutta. From the age of the sitter Mrs. Henderson seems the most likely subject for the portrait.
