Garden house of Mrs Stephenson afterwards Lady Essex. Artist(s): Cornish, Hubert (1757-1823)
- Scope & Content:
-
Garden house near Calcutta, 1793-98.
Inscribed on the reverse: ‘Garden house of the late Mrs Stephenstone afterwards Lady Essex.’
Pencil and water-colour; 28.6 by 45. 7 cm.
Purchased Christie’s 21 September 2000.
Note: Edward Stephenson, a member of the Board of Trade of the East India Company, died on the 13th July 1784. His widow, Sarah Stephenson (nee Bazett), was remarried on 6 June 1786 to the fifth Earl of Essex. Despite her remarriage in England, the house in Calcutta was obviously connected with her legacy for some time. Lady Sarah Essex died on the 16th January 1838.
