Nautch at a grand Calcutta mansion, with English guests being entertained. Artist(s): Hutchisson, William Henry Florio (fl. 1815-1861), attributed to
- Scope & Content:
-
A nautch party in a grand Calcutta mansion for Durga Puja, with British visitors being entertained, 1830-40.
Dancers and musicians are in the centre before the seated visitors, brilliantly lit from above. The shrine with the Goddess image is in the rear, while the shadowy wings are occupied by retainers, and a sinister armed figure on the left (see below).
Water-colour; 23 by 46.5 cm.
Purchased 2002.
Note: Atributed erroneously on the verso to Thomas Daniell. The work is a preparatory sketch perhaps for an oil painting. It would seem to have been seen by William Prinsep, whose very similar watercolour at WD4035 must be based on it. Prinsep opens up the foreground but makes the architecture unstable compared with this version, as well as spelling out the function of the armed figure, who is about the sacrifice a goat.
