A female kudu. Artist(s): Daniell, Samuel (1775-1811)
- Scope & Content:
-
A female kudu, c. 1801.
Pencil; 187 by 206 mm.
Inscribed: ‘Female Koodoo’ upper right, and again lower right, and ‘Daniell’ lower left. Also ‘Samuel Daniell. Female Koodoo’ on a detached piece of paper stuck to backing board.
Provenance: Iolo A. Williams. Purchased March 2005.
This is a female kudu of the Greater Kudu species (‘tregelaphus strepsiceros’). Its body is in profile, its head alert and looking out towards the picture plane as if alerted by a noise. It is not published in any of Daniell’s books. Only its male counterpart with immense spiral horns together with a rear view of the hornless female was published in ‘African Scenery and Animals’ in 1804 as a coloured aquatint with landscape, of which a reduced view in mirror reverse appeared as pl. 4 in the 1832 series.
