Architectural plans and elevations of the East India Company’s silk factory at Khumarkali, 1773, signed by ‘T.B.’
Pen and ink over traces of pencil; 16 by 24 ¼ inches.
Inscribed, ‘Plans, Elevations and sections of the Filature at Comercolly with its Appertenances. 1773’.
Further inscriptions designate the locations of ovens and a dwelling house.
In 1769 the East India Company implemented a scheme to produce Bengali silk in the Italian style. French and Italian artisans were sent to India to teach Bengali silk winders new techniques. Silk factories were constructed at the Company’s expense, and in 1774 and 1775 contracts were set up with Company Servants to oversee production of these new filature silks at Jahangerpur, Malda, Radnagar and Khumarkali.
