Framed miniature portrait of Henry Nicholetts (d. 1857)
Watercolour on paper, 53 x 39 mm
Purchased February 2008
Henry Nicholetts, son of John Nicholetts of South Petherton, Somerset, and his wife Mary; brother of Gilbert Nicholetts (1826-79), Indian army officer (Lieut. 1848; Lieut Col. 1874; killed in Afghan war at Kokoran 18 July 1879).
The Nicholetts family was connected by marriage with the family of Rajah James Brooke of Sarawak; Gilbert Nicholetts married Mary Anne Johnson (d.1901) in 1848. Mary Anne was a neice of Rajah James Brook (d.1868) and sister of the second Rajah, Sir Charles Anthoni Johnson Brooke (1829-1917).
Henry Nicholetts joined the service of Rajah James Brooke in 1856 and was based at Lundu (a town in Sarawak, Malaysia). In February 1857, he was visiting Kuching (a province in Sarawak) and on the night of the Chinese uprisings, 20 February, was asleep in the bungalow next door to the Rajah. Charles Penty, the Rajah's steward, wrote in April that year 'We then opened the Venetian window of my room and saw poor Mr. Nicholetts murdered before our eyes'. The Rajah wrote to his sister 'Poor Harry Nicholetts ... he was a gentle and amiable lad ... Suddenly awakened, he treid to make his way to the large house, and was killed in the attempt.' G. Jacob, 'Rajah of Sarawak, 1876, II, pp. 237-41.
The death of Henry Nicholetts is also mentioned in the account of the Chinese uprisings in Harriette McDougall, 'Sketches of our life in Sarawak', 1882, p. 129.
It is likely the miniature was painted before Nicholetts travelled to the east.
