HMS Minden
- Scope & Content:
-
Watercolour of the HMS Minden by an anonymous artist.
The Minden was a 3rd Class ship with 74 guns, weighing 1721 tons, made from teak in the Bombay Naval Dockyard. Construction was completed in 1810.
The Minden's first expedition began in February 1811, when she set sail to take part in the British Invasion of Java. An account tells us that on 5 June 1811 troops from HM 14th Regiment, along with the Minden's Marines, carried out a successful raid at Salira. Five years later the Minden was at the Battle of Algiers. She saw continuous service, including time as a hospital ship, and ended her days as a store ship in Hong Kong before disposal in 1861.
