Add.Or.2554-2556
Three paintings from a set chiefly depicting occupations in South India.
By a Madras artist, c.1783.
Gouache; orange borders with red rules.
Presented 1 July 1969; 2554 and 2555 by Mildred and W.G. Archer; 2556 by Edwin Binney 3rd.
Note: These three paintings were part of a large set depicting occupations which also included two caricatures. Both caricatures had a Madras subject-matter which can be dated to 1782-83; see Add.Or.2556. The set also included a picture of a Madras sepoy carrying a musket with the words ‘HARRISON. 1779’, printed on the barrel. John Harrison was contractor to the Ordnance 1774-80. Although the style of these paintings closely resembles that of Tanjore painters, it is nevertheless a variant. It semes likely that the artist was of Tanjore origins but had settled in Madras and was executing an individual commission. Painting in Madras at this time appears to have been linked to individual patronage. A set in the Victoria and Albert Museum (I.S. 75(1-42)-1954) dated ‘Madras 1785’ was made for ‘J.P. Boileau Esq.’ and contains pictures of occupations as in the present set, as well as two portraits of a European, probably Boileau himself.
