NOTE : In style similar to Add.Or.32-38.
At the time of purchase these paintings were in a portfolio inscribed in ink in a late hand: ‘27 Paintings showing the different castes of South India brought to England in 1796 by Admiral Peter Rainier on his retirement as Commander in Chief R.N. Afterwards M.P for Sandwich.’
Admiral Rainier(1742-1808) entered the navy in 1756 and went to India. He was Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Navy in the East Indies from 1794 to 1805. After his retirement he became M.P. for Sandwich. The statement in the inscription that he retired in 1796 is inaccuratc, the true date being 1805. On grounds of style - the irregular shaped cloud, the plain ground, trees along the horizon and forked shadows - the paintings may well have been acquired in 1805.
