Add.Or.39-70
32 drawings bound into a volume, 24 depicting castes and occupations of South India, 2 festivals, 5 methods of transport and one showing a European house in Vellore.
Probably by a Tanjore artist, working at Vellore, c.1828.
Inscribed with titles. Water-marks of 1823 and 1826.
Gouache and water-colour; 13.5 by 19.5 ins.
Purchased 6 November 1954.
Note: Although modelled on standard South Indian sets produced chiefly at Tanjore, the present series also contains a drawing (Add.Or.70) of the bungalow of the Fort Adjutant at Vellore, and may therefore have been specially, commissioned by him. It also contains three paintings (Add.Or.67-69) which are clearly portraits of the Adjutant’s servants and office staff. In style the series differs from the standard sets since the figures are shown on an uncoloured background without sky, clouds, bushes or shadows. It is significant that the Moochy caste, to which the painter who made these drawings would himself have belonged, figures first in the book, Add.Or.39 being possibly a self-portrait of the artist. The British officer in the palanquin (Add.Or.59) is probably the Fort Adjutant who commissioned the set.
