By a Murshidabad artist, c.1780-90.
Book plate of ‘John White Esqr’.
Some pictures inscribed on back in English with subject.
Gouache and water-colour; size of album 12 by 9.5 ins; size of paintings: approx. 6.5 by 9 ins.
Note: The paintings can be divided into 3 groups. Add.Or.1009 is in a slightly different style from the rest and is closely related to Add.Or.2659, having the same composition in reverse.
Add.Or.1010-1030 show the figures set against a green ground with grassy clumps in the foreground and a line of small bushes on the horizon, a blue sky shading down to white. The colours are bright and clear and the folds of drapery are sharply defined. Add.Or.1031-1027 show the figures against a plain ground.
The volume belonged to John White who served in the Bengal Civil Service from 1778 to 1800, resigning in 1801. Apart from an embassy to the Raja of Berar from 1781 to 1783, he spent most of his service in Calcutta. Remembrancer of the Criminal Court. Six drawings in this album (WD1394-1399) were probably made by him.
