THE WELLESLEY ALBUM

Seven groups of drawings (totalling 138) depicting monuments, manners and customs mounted and bound into a volume: ‘The Wellesley Album’.

Inscribed on title-page: ‘Drawings illustrating the Manners and Customs of the Natives of India. Originally prepared by Order of Marquis Wellesley when Governor-General of India. See Council Minute dated 16th August 1866.’

Note: This volume was acquired together with 27 volumes of drawings depicting plants, birds, quadrupeds, insects and fishes of India and the East Indies (see M. Archer, ‘Natural History Drawings in the India Office Library’ (London, 1962). Like the natural history drawings, the present paintings were purchased from a certain J. Fletcher (‘ibid.,’ 91), and were probably also made by artists resident in Calcutta. The drawings can be divided into seven groups. No sets quite like them are known and although certain stock paintings are included, the drawings would appear to have been made especially for Wellesley. They were probably acquired on loose sheets from a number of different artists. By the time they reached the Library they had apparently lost their original order and after mounting were bound indiscriminately into one volume with a suitably inscribed title-page. In the present catalogue, an attempt has been made to group these drawings in sets by style.

Note: These drawings include Add.Or.1134 a free rendering of William Hodges’ ‘A View of the Ruins of part of the Palace and Mosque at Futtypoor Sicri’, plate 11 in his ‘Select Views’ (London, 1785-88); and Add.Or.1133, a free rendering, in reverse as if from a tracing, of ‘A View of the Mosque at Futtipoor Sicri’, plate 12 in the same publication. All, though clearly by an Indian artist working in British style, incorporate idioms peculiar to Hodges. Compare, in this respect, the dead trees in 1141-2 with the tree in ‘A View of the Gate of the Caravan Serai at Rajemahel’, ‘Select Views,’ plate 4; the dead top to a tree and dead branches in 1139, 1140 and 1143 with branches in ‘A View of a Mosque at Rajemahel’ and ‘A View of a Hill Village in the District of Baugelepoor’, plates 14 and 25; and the tall palm in 1141 with the tree in ‘A View of the Pagodas at Deogur’, plate 22. At the same time the drawing of the architecture is extremely inaccurate and is clearly not made from a study on the spot. It seems probable that Calcutta artists in the seventeen-nineties were availing of William Hodges’ ‘Select Views’ to make sets of landscape drawings depicting Mughal monuments for the British.

Note: The black borders, elongated figures with ragged drapery, monochrome colouring and subdued tones, characteristic of Company painting at Murshidabad, suggest that the artist may have migrated to Calcutta from that centre.

Note: A set similar in style to Add.Or.1127 etc. but smaller in size, perhaps by another artist who had migrated to Calcutta from Murshidabad. It is significant that the two soldiers in Add.Or.1160 are identical with two soldiers in the foreground of a Murshidabad picture in the Victoria and Albert Museum (11 (10)-1887 I.S).

Note: The set is marked by brilliant colouring - orange, red, brown, yellow, lime and peacock-blue. Shading is strongly defined and in many cases a background of shops, houses or landscapes is included. Add.Or.1110 is similar in composition to Add.Or.152.

Add.Or.1112 and 1121 are reproduced in Archer (1955), plate 15, fig. 31; plate 8, fig. 18, and were there assigned to Lucknow. Further research, however, has led to the conclusion that they were more likely made in Calcutta by a Murshidabad artist working in the early Murshidabad style (‘cf.’ Add.Or.1009-30). It is significant that a painting of hook-swinging in the Victoria and Albert Museum in similar style (11 (37)-1887 I.S.) is part of a group which also includes Murshidabad paintings of the sombre type.

Note: This set is marked by its delicate technique with stippling and small wrinkles on the faces. Heavy shadows are attached to the feet. Uncoloured backgrounds. Closely related to Add.Or.1185 etc. and 1183 etc. but by a different hand. The style suggests links with provincial Mughal centres.
