Inscribed with titles and Add.Or.173-6, 178. 188 and 189 signed by the painter in English.

Water-mark of 1845.

Water-colour; 11 by 7.75 ins.

Purchased 10 September 1955.

Note: These pictures by Shaikh Muhammad Amir are from one of his standard sets depicting servants, castes and occupations. Apart from Add.Or.185-7, which fill the sheet, the figures are shown against an uncoloured background with a low landscape. The writer Fanny Parks appears to have bought a set of drawings by this artist since four lithographs in her ‘Wanderings of a pilgrim in’ ‘search of the picturesque’ (London, 1850, i, plates 5, 8, 15, and 16) are clearly based on his work. She visited Calcutta for the last time in 1844.
