10 drawings bound into a volume depicting people of Manipur (Assam) and the neighbouring hill tracts.

By an Indian artist at Manipur for the North East India General Mission, c.1870.

Inscribed with titles.

Water-colour and gouache; 11 by 10 ins.

Presented by the C.M.S. Mission, London, 18 November 1956.

Note: Since no other paintings of costumes and occupations from Manipur have so far come to light, these drawings were almost certainly made especially for the Mission. They are a crude version of the Company style of Bengal. Most of the figures are shown in isolation against an uncoloured background; in others a simple landscape is introduced.
