8 drawings depicting Hindu and Muslim festivals and ways of life.
By Patna artists, c.1795-1800.
Inscribed on back with titles and notes. Watermark of 1794 on Add.Or.942.
Water-colour; various sizes.
Purchased 4 June 1959.
Note: These drawings appear to be part of a set given by Ephraim Pote to Elizabeth Collins. Pote served in Bengal from 1773 to 1800. Assistant at the Rangpur Factory, 1775-80; Commercial Resident, Rangpur, 1780-87; Commercial Resident, Patna, 1787-1800. It seems probable that the drawings were made for him while he was stationed in Patna. The first seven appear to be by the same artist, the last is by a different hand. These drawings, therefore, are some of the earliest examples of paintings made for the British in Patna. In style they are similar to the work of Murshidabad artists with the same awkward elongated figures wearing costumes with jagged folds. They would thus confirm the oral tradition (recorded Archer (1947), 5) that Murshidabad artists migrated to Patna to work for the British. Nothing is known of Elizabeth Collins.
