Inscribed in ink by an Indian with vernacular and English titles; also in certain cases in pencil with titles in ‘nagari’ characters.
Water-marks of 1814 and 1815.
Water-colour; size of volumes 9.75 by 7.5 ins.

Note: These volumes consist of a number of standard sets bound together. They strongly resemble Patna paintings and are often based on Patna models. Compare Add.Or.144 with a Patna painting reproduced in Archer (1955), fig.15, and Add.Or.121 with Archer (‘Patna painting,’ 1947), plate 4. There are also resemblances between this set and pictures of Murshidabad origin in the Wellesley collection: compare Add.Or.138 and Add.Or.1198; Add.Or.152 and Add.Or.1110; and Add.Or.99 and Add.Or.1231. These similarities would tend to confirm the oral tradition that the ancestors of Patna and Benares painters came from Murshidabad. In view of the reputation of Benares for its great variety of ascetics, the emphasis on this subject in the present set reinforces its Benares attribution.
