78 mica paintings consisting of 6 sets depicting festivals, Muharram festival figures, dancing-girls and musicians, methods of transport, occupations and servants.
By a Benares or Patna artist, c.1850-60 [perhaps 1830-40].
Inscribed in some cases with titles.
Gouache on mica; various sizes.
Presented by Lady Mackworth-Young, 5 October 1929.
Note: These mica paintings were originally mounted in an album entitled ‘Indian Talc Costumes’ and inscribed: ‘Sir William Mackworth Young, K.C.S.I from his old friend Hilton Bothamley 1908 in remembrance of early days.’
Archdeacon Hilton Bothamley of Bath was the first cousin of Sir William Mackworth Young, Indian Civil Service 1863-1902. Mr G. Mackworth-Young, when presenting the collection on behalf of his mother, Lady Mackworth-Young, stated that it was not known for certain when or where the collection had been formed, but he believed that it had been made by Archdeacon Bothamley’s father-in-law, whose name was King and who had served in India.
The mica paintings are arranged in sets of a dozen as sold to the British.
