By Delhi or Agra artists, c.1808-20.

Inscribed with titles in English and sometimes in Urdu. Title-page of volume I (Add.Or.1762-1778) inscribed: ‘Drawings of the Taj Mahal at Agra 1820’; title page of volume II (1779-1789) inscribed: ‘Views of Agra & Delhi in the East Indies 1820.’

Water-colour; size of volumes 22.5 by 32 ins; drawings of various sizes.

Water-marks of 1804, 1806, 1808 and 1813.

Purchased February 1954.

Note: A similar collection to Add.Or.921-936, with the buildings shown in elevation against a blank background, but by several hands. In most cases there are black Indian ink borders and rules. The drawings differ in quality and are on paper with water-marks of varying dates. They were probably collected in India over a period of several years; 1820 may refer to the date of binding. Both volumes bear the book-plate of James Butler East with the motto: ‘Aequo Pede Propera’. There is no trace of East in the East India Company Records and it therefore seems unlikely that the drawings were collected by him in India. They may have been a gift received by him in 1820 and then bound up into volumes for his library.
