Two unfinished sets of drawings intended as panoramas depicting durbar processions of Akbar II, Emperor of Delhi, 1806-37.

Inscribed with names of individuals in Persian characters (transliterations added by India Office Library), also with colour notes.

Note: These sheets were bound into volumes after reaching the Library. Since the principal figures in the procession are not included, these sections were probably extracted at some time for separate mounting. The present drawings with their careful portrait studies are freer and more realistic versions of the type of panorama scroll represented by Add.Or.888. Since it is unlikely that by the eighteen-twenties the Emperor would have possessed as many soldiers and followers as those depicted, the artist may well have exaggerated the numbers for reasons of prestige. Among those included in the procession is a calligrapher (Add.Or.289), a tribute to the high esteem in which scribes were held.
