Two portraits of diplomats made in Afghanistan.
By Muhammad ‘Azim (perhaps a Punjabi artist), 1854.
Inscribed with names in Persian charactcrs and English.
Gouache and water-colour; 8.75 by 7 ins.
Purchased from Mrs Vandaleur, great-niece of Sir Herbert Edwardes, 26 October 1954.
Note: These drawings were among the papers of Sir Herbert Edwardes and the English inscriptions appear to be in his handwriting. Edwardes went to Peshawar in 1854 as Commissioner and became involved in negotiations for a treaty with the Amir of Afghanistan. It is possible that they were made by a painter who had accompanied him from the Punjab.
[2 more of this series sold Sotheby’s 26 April 1990, including Dost Muhammad Khan and Ghulam Haidar Khan, both dated 1854. The Dost Muhammad Khan portrait is taken from Colesworthy Grant's ‘Oriental Heads’, which bears in the lithograph the date 1841.]
