72 paintings bound in 2 volumes depicting trades and castes in Cutch, including the Rao of Cutch, Rao Desal II (ruled 1819-60), as well as his palace and other buildings in Bhuj.
By a Western Indian artist probably at Bhuj, Cutch, August 1856.
Inscribed with titles in English by an Indian, perhaps a clerk who supervised the artist.
Water-colour; size of volume 5.5 by 9 ins.
Acquired 17 August 1908, together with Add.Or.1584-1621.
Note: The dates when the drawings were made are sometimes given and the inscriptions on Add.Or.1532 and 1538 imply that Friday was a rest day. This would suggest that the artist was a Muslim. Since they were acquired at the same time, it seems probable that all three volumes of drawings belonged to the same Englishman. He may well have been an army officer posted to Bhuj and also Belgaum. The British had a Resident in Cutch from 1819.
The styles of both sets of drawings are similar. The figures are usually set against a plain background with a wash of light colour for the ground and shadows by the feet. Shading is indicated by minute stippling. [cf. S.C. Welch, ‘Room for Wonder,’ no.71, the album of Henry Pitman, D.I.G. of Hospitals, c.1846; also Sotheby’s sale 14 Dec.1987.]
