A series of twelve ‘baramasa’ illustrations.

Jaipur, c.1840.

Mounted in an album (formerly Album 70); presented 21 April 1915.

Each miniature has a yellow panel above with four or five lines of descriptive text in nagari; blue and red borders separated by narrow bands of yellow.

Picture and text panel 180 by 113 mm (approx.); page 260 by 180 mm.

Note: On the reverse of each picture a nineteenth-century English owner has written his interpretation of the sentiments involved in each month; all of these are not quoted here, but that for Add.Or.2796 provides a typical example: ‘No.1. The Month of Chiet or March. Representing a Woman dissuading her Husband from travel. In which she succeeds by telling him not to allow his heart to form any wish, as this month is celebrated for the beauty & variety of its’ ‘flowers; the sweetness of the notes of the Birds - and the women dedicate it to Love.’
