Six leaves from a manuscript of the ‘Bhagavata Purana.’

Purchased 1954.
Each folio has three to seven lines of Sanskrit text in nagari characters in the centre, with two to seven lines of commentary above and below; vertical rules in gold, black and red; vertical bands at the ends of each page containing floral designs in gold, green and red.
Gouache with gold.
Page 168 by 400 mm.
Note: From a manuscript of almost identical format to Add.Or.2541-2544, which differs by being on European paper. Pages from a similar manuscript are in the Prince of Wales Museum, Bombay (Acc.no.54.2 (1-4)), attributed by Dr Moti Chandra to Nagpur and dated the mid-eighteenth century. A manuscript of Niwaza’s ‘Sakuntala’ dated AD1789 with illustrations in the same style was previously in the possession of Raja Pratap Rao Singh Bhonsle of Nagpur, and is now in the National Museum, New Delhi (Banerji (1955-56)).
