Ten drawings in watecolour c.1808 depicting fruits with their leaves and blossom probably from Sumatra, measuring approx. 16 by 21 inches and bound in a volume measuring 19 by 23.5 inches. A bird is included in the last two drawings.
These paintings are by a Chinese artist probably from Sumatra and are executed on English paper with an 1807 watermark. They were probably made about 1808. There is no record for whom they were made or when they were acquired by the Library, but they appear to have been borrowed by the Marsdens in 1809. Six drawings of fruits which correspond to these were 'Feb. 22nd, 1809. Taken by Mr. Wilkins for Mrs Marsden' and returned on 2nd October. On 24th February Marsden himself took away two more drawings . Folio 4 depicting a 'Mangustin' is very Similar to Plate 3 of his Sumatra illustrations and it seems probable that Mrs Marsden (née Wilkins) , who made this and several other drawings for her husband's book, adapted these drawings.
