Fifteen watercolour drawings of 3 mammals, 2 birds, 9 fishes and 1 reptile, from the East Indies, measuring approx. 14.25 by 21 inches.
These drawings were almost certainly collected by Edward Clive, 1st Earl of Powis (1754-1839) when he was Governor of Madras from 1798 to 1803 and were probably made by Indian and Chinese painters working for the British in Malacca. For Clive, see Archer's Natural History Drawings in the India Office Library, p.8. The titles on some of the drawings may have been written by the painters themselves, e.g. No.347, a parakeet, inscribed 'Paret'. No.348, a kingfisher, inscribed 'Fishing burd'. No.349, a type of snapper, inscribed 'This Malacaw fish. Name E-can-maraw.' Another fish, No.354, inscribed 'This Malacaw fish. Name of E-can-mudoo. Upon his head 3 Horns.'
These drawings were purchased at Sotheby's in January 1956, from the collection of the Earl of Powis and were part of an album of 19 pictures, 4 of which were purchased by the Indian Section, Victoria and Albert Museum (Nos. I.S. 1-4 1956) and 15 by the India Office Library.
