Two photographs and 5 drawings in watercolour and 1 in pen-and-ink depicting fishes from the Malabar Coast of India. Collection made by Francis Day (1829-1889). See Archer's Natural History Drawings in the India Office Library, p.46. The drawings were made by Day in 1863 while he was stationed at Cochin.

The two photographs (Nos.1317 and 1318) are inscribed, 'Photo by Mr. Griggs from original drawing by Dr. F. Day'. The remaining drawings are inscribed with the Latin name of the subject and in some cases the vernacular name. They are also inscribed, 'Dr. F. Day, 1863. Cochin.'

These drawings were part of the material used by Day for his catalogue of fishes and were brought by him to England in 1864-5. The catalogue was published as 'On the Fishes of Cochin on the Malabar Coast of India,' ‘Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London’, part i, 18 January 1865; part ii, 14 March 1865. A fuller catalogue, entitled ‘The Fishes of Malabar’, was published in 1865. No.1317 is a photograph of the drawing from which Plate I in both publications was made. The other drawings were not used for illustrations.
