Heyne Collection

Forty-four drawings in pen-and-ink and watercolour (4 unfinished) depicting Indian birds, bound in a volume measuring 21 by 14 inches.

These drawings were collected sometime between 1793 and 1813 in South India by Dr. Benjamin Heyne (?-1819) while he was Company's Botanist in the Carnatic. (For Heyne, see Archer's Natural History Drawings in the India Office Library, pp.27-8.)

All would appear to be by the same Indian painter who has a distinctive style. From pencil inscriptions on many of the drawings he may have been named 'Chobi' (Chaubey).

The drawings were given to the Library on 18th October 1813, when Heyne was on leave in England. The Day Book records, 'Dr. Heyne presented to the Library 44 Drawings of Indian Birds'.
