Two watercolour drawings depicting cultivated and uncultivated ‘litchi’ and ‘loquat’ leaves, measuring 14 by 10 inches.
These drawings were made for Sir Albert Howard (1873-1947) on 18th April 1921 by Indian painters employed by the Government of India at the Pusa Experiment Station in Bihar. Sir Albert worked there as First Economic Botanist from 1904-24. The drawings were made to illustrate his article 'The Effect of Grass on Trees', ‘Agricultural Journal of India’, XX, part iv, July 1925, reprinted from ‘Proceedings of the Royal Society’, Series B, XCVII, No.B.683. The drawings were also reproduced in ‘Soil and Health’, Spring 1948, 40-1.
Lady Howard presented the drawings in 1955. They are special interest in showing that Indian artists were still making natural history drawings for the Government as late as 1925.
