Parry Collection
Fourteen drawings in watercolour depicting 12 birds, 1 mammal and 1 fish from Sumatra; bound in a volume measuring 21 by 14 inches.
These drawings were collected by Richard Parry (in the East 1793-1811) while Resident of Fort Marlborough (Bencoolen) in Sumatra between 1807 and 1811. See Archer's Natural History Drawings in the India Office Library, p.19.
Nos.288, 290-4 and 297 are inscribed in Urdu, 'The painter of this picture is Manu Lal, artist, an inhabitant of Azimabad (Patna City) '. The style of the paintings of birds is fairly uniform, apart from 286-7. In nos. 290-297 the birds stand on a small patch of shaded grass, while a similar effect is achieved by a branch in water-colour in 288-9. It seems likely that all this group were painted by Manu Lal. Manu Lal worked for Wellesley, and was presumably taken to Sumatra by Parry when he was Resident at Bencoolen. The paper is watermarked 1806 and was probably brought from England by Parry on the expiry of his leave.
The date '26/6/1812' on No.299 refers to Parry's presentation of the collection to the East India Company's Library on his retirement. The Company's first Day Book records this gift, 'June 26th, 1812. Recd. from the Baggage Warehouse, per ‘Union’ 202 Drawings of Plants. Mr. Ricd. Parry. Plants and Animals from Sumatra.' On 2nd December 1812, 52 duplicates were returned to him and 150 drawings retained. 125 paintings of plants were transferred to Kew in 1879.
