Thirty-five drawings in watercolour and pencil depicting 17 birds, 5 mammals, 12 insects and 1 amphibia from northern India, bound in a volume measuring 21 by 14 inches.

The drawings of birds, mammals and amphibia were made at the Saharanpur Botanic Garden between 1823 and 1831, and collected by John Forbes Royle (1799-1858). Those of insects were made in March 1835 by J.O. Westwood (1805-93) , the famous Victorian entomologist, from the specimens which Royle had brought to England. See Archer's Natural History Drawings in the India Office Library, pp.25-7.

Some of these drawings are the originals of plates in Royle's 'Illustrations of the Botany and other Branches of the Natural History of the Himalayan Mountains and the Flora of Cashmere' (London, 1833-9). No.788 is the original of the upper part of Plate 5, No.790 of the lower part. No.786 is the original of the Honeysucker in Plate 7 and No.780 of the Pitta in reverse. No.773 and No.774 in reverse appear in Plate 8. Insects Nos.798, 793, 794 and 796 appear as numbers 4, 6, 5, 9, in Plate 9. Nos.800-4 and 797, 795 and 799 appear as numbers 1, 2, 4, 8, 10, 7, 6, 9 in Plate 10.

The paintings of birds, mammals and amphibia appear to have been made by the team of Indian artists employed by Royle at the Saharanpur Garden, amongst whom was Lakshman Singh. His name appears on Nos.780, 781 and 784.
