Drawings of the fauna of Nepal and the Himalaya, from the collections of Brian Houghton Hodgson (1800-94). Hodgson served with the East India Company in Bengal, 1818-44, spending almost the whole of his service in Nepal. He went back to India in a private capacity to continue his researches and lived in Darjeeling until 1858 when he returned to England. He made vast collections of geographical, linguistic, architectural, ethnographic and natural history material relating to his official duties and to his work on Indology and Buddhism. He presented these materials to a number of libraries and museums in England and Europe. For Hodgson’s career and collections, see David M. The present collection is of individual sheets from various sketchbooks of both European and Indian paper, with date watermarks from 1840 and 1850. It therefore seems to relate to the end of Hodgson’s period in Kathmandu, and also to the time which he spent in Darjeeling. It has been arranged as far as possible according to the species of the subjects..
79 folios in all. 14 sheets of drawings 30.5 by 20 cm, 3 sheets of drawings 31.5 by 20cm, 11 sheets of drawings on laid paper 32 by 20 cm, the remainder on thin paper 26 by 20cm.
