51 drawings (depicting 44 birds, 6 mammals and 1 dissection of mammal), made at Bencoolen, Sumatra, for Sir Stamford Raffles. All would appear to be by the natural history draughtsman, J. Briois. Nos. 5-8, 18, 22, 23 are attributed to him and the other other drawings are in similar style. Nos. 1, 3, 5-7. 10. 12. 14. 19. 20, 22, 23, 25-27, 32-35. 37, 39, 41-43 are inscribed in Jawi, nos. 40, 41 and 47 in English. These drawings formed the first part of a large volume bearing a label inscribed: 'No. 1. Drawings of Birds and Plants done after the burning of the Fame. Bencoolen. March 1824.' Although the mammals are not referred to in this inscription, the drawings follow those of the birds in the bound volume.

Exhibited nos. 34, 44, 48, 49, British Museum, Raffles: Sword of the East, December 1998 - April 1999. These have all now been separately mounted.
