An album of 79 folios containing 80 drawings in watercolour and pencil (10 unfinished); 10 depicting mammals (ff.1-10), 17 birds (ff.11-26); 16 fishes (ff.27-40), 1 amphibia (f.41), 2 arthropods (ff.41, 42), 4 insects (ff.43-46), 20 reptiles (f.46-49, 54-63, 65-69), 9 flowers (ff.70-78) and 1 a mermaid (f.53). Drawn under the supervision of Colin Mackenzie.
Many of the drawings are inscribed with notes giving the name of the subject or the artist, place of origin, and measurements. There is also a long note on mermaids and mermen (ff.50-52) and a Sanskrit description of a snake (f.64).
The picture of a Malabar Squirrel (f.1) is a copy of a drawing in the Buchanan collection (NHD3, no.510).
Most of the specimens are from South India, but some are from Sumatra. The drawings were made at various dates bewteen 1800 and 1817 by Mackenzie's draftsmen including Anderson, Ignatio, Najibulla and Saxton.
This album was long misplaced and hence not originally catalogued in M Archer's 'Natural History Drawings in the India Office Library'.
