ROY, JAMINI (1887-1973)
Born Beliatore in Bengal to a middle-class landowning family, Roy was sent at 16 to be trained in the academic tradition of the Government School of Arts and Crafts, Calcutta. He reacted by seeking inspiration from the folk traditions of Bengal, although not averse when established from seeking inspiration even from Europe.

Two landscapes, c.1940.
Gift of Mrs Margaret Stavridi, 1997.
Purchased by the donor at the artist’s studio, Calcutta, 1940.
Note: Both landscapes are dominated by blues and yellows, and show Roy experimenting with Impressionist formulae, with dabs of rich colour applied in the foreground and thick layers for the distance. That he was experimenting in a European tradition is suggested by his signature in Roman initials, rather than in his usual Bengali script.
