29 drawings mounted in an album including one drawing of a Mughal monument, three portraits and 25 drawings of occupations.
Mostly by Delhi artists, between 1830 and 1840.
Mid-19th century album, 294 by 233 mm, yellow card covers with gold embossed Indian binding designs, the front cover having an aquatinted mountainous scene in its central cartouche; most of its pages with printed frames in gold and colours surrounding the mounted drawings; water-colour and gouache; various sizes, and with inscriptions in Persian.
Transferred from the National Army Museum, 1980.
Note: The provenance of this album is not known but it seems to have belonged to Captain W.S.R. Hodson of the 1st Bengal Fusiliers, commanding Corps of Guides, Peshawar, whose name and address was on a piece of paper in the album. Most of the drawings are from the one set of occupations of about 1840, measuring 165 by 105 mm, others are from a smaller set about 1830 or may have been cut down. Only those sizes and provenances differing from the norm are noted below.
