A model of a lion, standing on a wooden base, a halter round his neck.
Wax, possibly ‘dhuna’, the aromatic gum of the sal tree (‘Shorea robusta’), painted.
Base 20.5 by 9.75 by 2 cms. Animal 12.5 cm at highest point of mane.
Provenance: Malet family until 1982. Purchased 1993.
Literature: Hobhouse Ltd, ‘Indian Painting during the British Period’, 1986, no.9.
The model is the same lion which appears in Add.Or.4148, from the album of such drawings done by Gangaram for Sir Charles Malet. A whole group of such animal models is known, including an elephant, camel, rhinoceros etc.: see ‘Indian Drawings of Plants and Animals,’ , Hobhouse Ltd., London, Spring 1986.
