By Benares artists, 1807-10.
Uninscribed, save for pencil numeration, but with watermarks of 1807 and 1812.
Water-colour; size of volume 230 by 180 mm. Note on flyleaf: ‘Belonged to James Munro Macnabb. Bought from J.F. Macnabb by A.C. Macnabb, 1928’.
Provenance: Macnab family collection. Purchased 1984 with Mss Eur F206, WD4043-87, WD4117-8, Add.Or.4302-6 and Photo752..
Note: Archibald Corrie Macnabb bought the collections in 1928 from his half-brother the Rev. James Frederick Macnabb, eldest grandson of James Munro Macnabb, who was in the Bengal Civil Service 1804-31. The album is not a unified set, but consists of parts of two sets (4205-28 4230-38) with one isolated painting from another set (4229). The first set measures 226 by 180 mm, within black frames, and has been bound straight into the album. The second set is of slightly varying sizes, also within black frames, and these have been laid down. The album was made up about 1840 after Macnabb’s return to Scotland, as the paintings are interleaved throughout with paper watermarked ‘J. Whatman 1838’ and ‘J. Rump 1837’.
