Two Maithil Brahmin ‘aides-memoire’ for the decoration of the bridal chamber on the occasion of the ‘first’ marriage of a young brahmin couple.

Note: Both these large-scale designs seem to be for complete walls, as they are unitary designs surrounded by frames. For a description of their purpose, see Archer, ‘Indian Popular Painting’, pp. 85-91. These two are designs for the first, unconsummated, marriage of a young brahmin couple, as the two fertility symbols, the lotus-circle and the bamboo-shoot, are kept apart. The colours are predominantly purple, red, black, pale yellow, ultramarine and dull blue.
