By a Tanjore artist at Trichinopoly, 1780-86.

Water-colours, within black ruled frames: 245 by 427.5 mm; size of page: 29 by 46 cm.

In a contemporary red morocco binding with a gold-tooled border, 29.5 by 47 cm; cover title: ‘Lives of the Brahmins’. Inscribed on the inside cover: ‘A book of paintings exhibiting views of all the ceremonies which are performed by the Brahmins at the different periods of their lives; beginning with the ceremony of the Birth of a Brahmin, & terminating with that of a Brahmin woman burning herself upon the same funeral pile with her husband. This Book was executed under the immediate direction of two of the Church Brahmins of Srirangam Pagoda’.

Purchased 1986. The album was originally in the collection of David Simpson, who served as surgeon at Trichinopoly 1780-86 (D.G. Crawford, ‘Roll of the Indian Medical’ Service, Calcutta, 1930, p. 265), and sold at Christie’s 26 May 1792, lot 49, for £16/16, bought by Marsh. Add.MS 15504A and B (copies of frescoes on Madurai temples) and Add.Or.4301 were also in this collection, and both were bought by Townley..

Note: The drawings are on paper water-marked ‘J. Whatman’, each protected by a guard sheet, some with inscriptions showing that they are being re-used. Four folio pages of description in ink are tipped-in at the beginning of the volume, and this information is largely repeated, in faded pencil, at the bottom of each drawing. Since the last few such inscriptions are in a muddle, it would follow that they are later than the tipped-in ones, which are accordingly cited here in preference.

The style is clear and simple, with a minimum of elaboration of landscape or buildings - skies are plain blue throughout, the ground in outside ceremonies dull green or brown washes with brushed in heavier strokes. The drawings clearly show details of clothing, caste-marks, food, jewellery, etc., apart from their value as social observation.
