An album of 75 portraits depicting principally the courtiers and ministers of the Nizams of Hyderabad ‘Ali Khan (reg.1762-1803) and Sikandar Jah (reg.1803-29).assembled originally in Hyderabad in the early 19th century, refurbished about 1900 and presented in 1915 by Nizam Mir Usman ‘Ali Khan to the Viceroy Lord Hardinge.

By Hyderabad artists, c.1780 and 1800-25.

Album pages of vivid blue and yellow inner frames, sometimes with an innermost broad frame of gold, with orange borders; 29.5 by 20 cms. Bound up in an album covered with brown morocco, tooled and gilt, bound 1899/1900 by Muhammad ‘Abd al-Latif. All the album pages have printed labels identifying the portraits.

Inscribed on fly-leaf: ‘To His Excellency Lord Hardinge of Penshurst Viceroy of India (with all good wishes) from Mir Usman ‘Ali Khan Nizam of Hyderabad 15th June 1915.’.

Note: The album is particularly valuable for the large number of portraits and notables of the court of Hyderabad about 1810 under Nizam Sikandar Jah (1803-29), during whose reign most of the portraits as well as those of earlier rulers seem to have been painted, greatly supplementing in this respect the album of Henry Russell, Resident at Hyderabad 1811-20 (Add.Or.1912-47). An exception is the portait of Nizam ‘Ali with his diwan Aristu Jah in a larger format (Add.Or.4411), which together with portaits of notables of Nizam ‘Ali’s court in the same format are about 15 to 20 years earlier.

The paintings were mounted into their new album leaves and bound up by Muhammad ‘Abd al-Latif about 1900. It is not clear whether this was a refurbishing of an existing album or if this was a new compilation from various sets existing at the time, so that it is also unclear what significance if any is to be read into the absence of a portrait of Nizam Sikandar Jah himself, unless the idealised portrait of Alexander the Great (Sikandar) at the end of the album is to be taken as a political reference to the Nizam. In this case considerable significance may perhaps be read into the presence of portraits of several Hyderabad nobles who advocated alliance with the Marathas rather than the East India Company, and the corresponding absence of ministers who advocated the reverse.
