THE UNDERHILL ALBUM
---------------------
Add.Or.4513-4612
The Underhill Album containing Bengal and Kalighat paintings, Calcutta lithographs and miscellaneous other prints, and Burmese paintings, all datable to the 1850s or earlier. The album was assembled by Edward Bean and Emily Underhill, 1854-57. It contains 4 Bengal school paintings c.1850 (Add.Or.4513-4516), 22 Kalighat paintings of the 1850s (Add.Or.4517-38), 36 Calcutta woodblock prints (Add.Or.4544-79), 9 prints from Benares (Add.Or.4580-87, 4590), 19 prints from Upper India (Add.Or.4591-4609, all but one the products of the lithographic press in the Agra Central Jail), 5 Burmese paintings from the Tavoy area (Add.Or.4539-43), 2 specimens of Chinese “money for the dead” (Add.Or.4588-89, and 3 miscellaneous prints from European presses (Add.Or.4610-12).
The evidence connecting the album with Underhill is a pencilled note referring to a Mrs. Underhill’s visit to the Agra Central Jail (Add.Or.4593) on 22nd December 1855, which date coincides with the presence in Agra of Dr. Edward Bean Underhill and his second wife Emily (eldest daughter of John Lee Benham of London). Underhill (1813-1901), a missionary advocate and Baptist, became Joint Secretary to the Baptist Missionary Society in 1849, in which capacity he embarked on a world tour visiting the Baptist missionary centres. See E.B. Underhill,’ Report presented to the Committee of the Baptist Missionary Society on his return from India,’ London, 1857. “During a long stay in India and Ceylon from October 1854 to February 1857 he acquired a firm knowledge of Indian problems, which he placed at the disposal of the Committee of the House of Commons on the affairs of India in 1859” (DNB).

4 paintings of Hindu divinities, laid down on album leaves.
By an artist of the Bengal school, mid-19th century.

Note: From the Underhill Album. The Underhills were in Calcutta in 1855 and must have collected these paintings from Kalighat at that time. Several are painted over a lithographed outline with the signature ‘Sri becaramdas pande’ (see Archer’s’ Indian Popular Painting’, 143, 146), some of whose work is dated 1857 and 1862 ‘(ibid.).’

References are made below to other Calcutta woodblock prints in the collection, listed in M. Archer, ‘Indian Popular Painting in the India Office Library’ (London, 1977), and to a volume of such prints in the British Library collection (14068.e.1).
