Note: From a large collection of Indian furniture designs of the Victorian period offered on the London market in 1991. The papers were largely imported British papers, but a few had interesting Indian watermarks from Lucknow, including the Lucknow Paper Mills mark noted below. Others included Cobra Brand (on a circular belt), and Guaranteed British Make inside circle; a crown and centaur motif with ‘Gauhar-i Falq’ in Urdu and ‘Gouhar-i Fa/ British Make’ above and below; and a shield with crown, star and moon device, with ‘Mah-i Munir’ in Urdu and ‘Mahe-Moone/ British Make’ above and below. The inscription on the verso of Add.Or.4614 was also on some of the others, indicating that the furniture was to be had from the firm of Madhu Prasad and Beni Prasad of the Roti Kunwan district of Benares. The designs are too fantastic for actual daily use, but correspond to the sort of furniture seen in the background to the occasional photograph of a Maharaja.
