Album in original patterned paper covers (front half-size, back full size), with lettered half-title: ‘Pictures from Hindu Mythology,’ and table of contents (see below). Front cover 39.5 by 33 cm; plates 1-39 (Add.Or.5267-5305) 39.5 by 30 cm; plates 40-60 (Add.Or.5306-5326) 39.5 by 50 cm; rear cover 39.5 by 50 cm.
Inscribed on reverse of cover: ‘To Mr E J Dean as a token of kind remembrance from Brijo Gopal Singh.’
Purchased July 1997.
Note: E.J. Dean retired as Superintendent of Government Printing in Calcutta in 1890; Brijo Gopal Singh was on the staff of the Printing Press. The album is made up from a collection of separately published prints, with an added title page and contents. Each coloured plate is normally captioned in Bengali, Hindi and English, with publication details: ‘Designed & Published by’ [or] ‘Printed by The Calcutta Art Studio, 185 Bowbazar Street, Calcutta.’ The monochrome plates normally are captioned only in English, with publication details: ‘Lith & printed at The Calcutta Art Studio’ etc.
