41 drawings of mostly Buddhist interest from Nepal, from the collections of Brian Houghton Hodgson (1800-94). Hodgson served with the East India Company in Bengal 1818-44, spending almost the whole of his service in Nepal. He went back to India in a private capacity to continue his researches and lived in Darjeeling until 1858 when he returned to England. He made vast collections of geographical, linguistic, architectural, ethnographic and natural history material relating to his official duties and to his work on Indology and Buddhism. He presented these materials to a number of libraries and museums in England and Europe.
The collection has been divided into four distinct subject categories: (1-17) Buddhist iconography; (18-28) representations of Nepalese sculpture and iconography; (29-34) Nepalese architecture; (35-41) figure and animal studies.
